This beautiful tropical island is only a few hours from Rio de Janeiro and offers beautiful, white sandy beaches, trails in the Atlantic Rainforest, clear emerald-green water with unique diving - and is one of the most important ecological sites in the world in terms of its biodiversity.

It is the third biggest Island of Brazil and is easily reached from the city Angra dos Reis, which is located two hours by car from Rio de Janeiro, by small ferryboats. The island does not allow cars and has many exotic beaches, some out to the open Atlantic Ocean, others in secluded coves and bays. The Tupinambá Indians, who originally inhabited the island had already named it Ilha Grande: Ipaum Guassú -  the big island.

Since 1992, the Island is a part of UNESCO´s Biosphere Reserve and it includes four Brazilian conservation units. In these units the Rio de Janeiro State University is developing twelve research projects. All this means that the Island and its ecosystems are being taken very well care of.

The island presents activities such as hiking in the Atlantic Rainforest, visiting the many exotic, white sandy beaches, rowing in kayaks in the calm bays with the clear blue-green water, diving with turtles and colorful fish, surfing one of Brazil´s most beautiful beaches, hikes to the Parrot Peak with a stunning view of the island - or just simply relaxing in a hammock.
