about brazil

History

Colonized by Portugal in 1500, Brazil became a Republic in 1889. At first the colony developed basically the sugar crop and industry using slaves brought from the African continent. Later when the gold mines were discovered a faster colonization started in the interior. People form all Europe came to Brazil hoping to get rich very fast.
After the "gold fever" the "black gold" took over and coffee plantations became one of the strongest sectors of Brazilian economy, They still exist until today, but now Brazil’s economy is huge and has diversified.

Culture

Brasil is a multi-ethnic country due to its history. Influences from Africa and Europe in the early days of colonization, mixed with the native indigenous, result in the variety we find in its people and culture.
The indigenous community experienced an immense reduction of its population due to the Europeans in the colonization. Nowadays they are only a few indigenous groups protected by the Government. They live mostly of selling arts, planting and hunting in protected areas.
From the African people we have the Samba, which gives origin to Carnaval that takes place  once a year in February and is the most famous festivity of this country. The African people also influenced the gastronomy, bringing from the senzalas (places where they lived in the early days when they were kept in slavery) the famous feijoada - black beans with many different types of meat. In the north of Brazil we have a enormous variety of typical food.
